Gosaikunda Lake and Lauribina Pass Trek
The Gosaikunda Lake Trek is a culturally rich and naturally stunning journey in the Langtang region of Nepal. Starting from Dhunche (about 117 km and 6–7 hours drive from Kathmandu), the trail ascends through forests and traditional Tamang villages to the sacred Gosaikunda Lake (4,380 m). Gosaikunda holds deep religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is believed that Lord Shiva created the lake by striking his trident into a mountain to obtain water.
The trek crosses the challenging Lauribina Pass (4,610 m) and descends through beautiful alpine terrain and rhododendron forests to Sundarijal, near Kathmandu. This trek is moderate to difficult due to high altitude and steep climbs, especially at the pass.
From the trail, you can view Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), and even parts of Annapurna range on clear days. The route lies within Langtang National Park, home to diverse flora such as pine, rhododendron, and bamboo, and fauna like red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and various bird species.
While not legally mandatory, hiring an experienced guide is highly recommended for safety, acclimatization, and navigation through high passes. The trek offers a spiritual, scenic, and adventurous Himalayan experience.
