Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek
The Kanchenjunga Trek is a remote and scenic journey in eastern Nepal, named after Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third-highest mountain. This region was opened for trekking in 1988 and lies in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, supported by the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to preserve its unique biodiversity. The trail passes through lush forests, alpine meadows, and high mountain passes, rich in flora like rhododendron, orchids, and juniper, and fauna including red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, and blue sheep.
Major peaks seen Mt.Kanchenjunga are Jannu (7,710m), Kabru (7,412m). The trek follows off-the-beaten trails through remote villages of Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Tibetan communities, offering rich cultural experiences. Fitness level must be high due to the long duration, altitude, and strenuous terrain.
Accommodation is basic, with limited teahouses offering simple meals like Dal Bhat, noodles, and tea. Risks include altitude sickness, landslides, and remote medical access. Spring (March–May) and autumn (Oct–Nov) are best for clear views and safer conditions. Highlights include breathtaking mountain views, diverse landscapes, rare wildlife, and cultural interaction in untouched Himalayan villages.
